Where the river meets the sea

A community-owned, off-grid lodge on an undeveloped stretch of the Wild Coast, with 10 km of empty beach below.

Above the river mouth

The lodge sits on a grassy promontory above the point where the Nqabara and Nqabarana rivers join and run out to sea. Between you and the beach lie 800 hectares of indigenous forest and grassland.

This is one of the few parts of the Wild Coast that has never been developed. The area is designated environmentally sensitive, and the Nqabara community, who own the lodge, are determined to keep it that way. The nearest homesteads are 3 km away, so the loudest thing you'll hear at night is the sea.

River, sea and forest

Every day here can be different. Paddle upriver in the morning, walk the beach at low tide, and fall asleep to the waves.

On the rivers

Canoe or paddle-board up the mangrove-lined Nqabarana, swim in Home Pool where the estuary forms a natural pool, or take a boat up the wide Nqabara to the call of fish eagles.

Along the coast

Long white beaches, rock pools, and shore fishing for kob and garrick. Dolphins are seen all year, and humpback and southern right whales pass daily from June to November.

Through the forest

Join a guided walk with a qualified ranger, look for Narina trogons and Knysna turacos, or hike the coast to Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve. The lodge is a natural halfway stop between The Haven and Kobb Inn.

Two rivers to fish when the sea won't play

Garrick and kob are the prize on the Nqabara, with grunter, perch, kingfish and rock salmon in the channels. When the tide is right, cross to the beach for kob on the drop-offs or silvers off Sunrise Rocks. Rods, canoes, boats and guides can all be hired at the lodge.

We practise catch and release. A fishing licence is required.
